| HOBART, AUSTRALIA-(30-12-2002) Alex Whitworth normally celebrates New Year’s Eve at sea with his crew but this year, he has joined the remainder of the fleet in Constitution Dock more than a day before tomorrow night’s New Year celebrations.
The last yacht in the 57-strong fleet contesting this year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Berrimilla crossed the finish line off Hobart’s historic Battery Point at 12.23pm this afternoon.
“Sorry to keep you waiting,” Whitworth laughed as he was clapped into the dock by well-wishers and sailors.
Apart from the two retirements at the start on Boxing Day, December 26, when the fleet left Sydney Harbour, all 55 yachts have finished the 630 nautical mile passage and race organisers are delighted with the outcome.
